Underhand Short Toss Drill (down & away)
A simple and effective drill for working on hitting the low and outside pitch. Also a great drill for hitters of all ages. The tosser is able to put the ball into the zone with consistency, while the batter is able to get lots of swings. Coaches, you will love this drill because you can work the entire team in a short amount of time and not wear your arm out.
The Setup
The batter should take his normal stance at the plate. The tosser can stand or sit directly in front of the batter behind an L-screen about 20 feet away. The tosser then tosses the ball into the zone low and outside forcing the batter to hit the ball to the opposite field. The tosser should try to keep the ball around the batter's knees to make it a tough pitch to hit. This drill |
should be done at every practice and even before games. The hitters can get lots of swings in a short amount of time.
Variation
Challenge the batter by having the tosser change speed or put spin on the ball to simulate fastballs and offspeed pitches.
